Basic Installation of MEPIS:
Why to use ?
If you had read the
ubuntu on the
same laptop then the question would not have arrived. Since I could not
install many of the Codecs and plugins on ubuntu also I had to
make lot of effort on installing applications offline. I had then
wanted to move from ubuntu to MEPIS or SuSE. I hence tried MEPIS.
While I have shorted out the procedure for installation of software on ubuntu after good amount of efforts.

When I started live CD of MEPIS it was rocking. Following things started working from LIVE CD.
Obtaining MEPIS http://www.mepis.com
Installing:
For using the ZTE Reliance PCMCIA CDMA wireless internet card, I had installed WindowsXP (to expire soon) on LAPTOP. Windows is installed in first 5.5GB of the HDD formated FAT32 while balance was kept unpartitioned. I made another partition of 5.8GB ext3 just after FAT32 partition using QTParted from live CD. I had read in the installation guide that MEPIS will detect Windows and add to the GRUB & it did the same ! I allowed MEPIS to write in MBR.
Post-Install modifications/tweaks
It does not require any . . . !
Setting up additional features for MEPIS
Unresolved issues
Internal Modems as usual
New Hardware PCMCIA modem ZTE CDMA 1X needs attentions of developers. (this is something which I have to stop crying of and look for other options very soon.)
Configuration Files
I did not (and better not) change them.
My opinion
My overall impression is that MEPIS rocks, with every thing packed in the 3 extra CDs given its really good for the people who do not have internet working on their Linux desktop/laptop.Contact Information
