I have installed the ubuntu on my laptop for its
performance https://desaiyn.tripod.com/laptop/ubuntu_on_thinkpad_R52.html
I am unable to access the internet from this laptop as internal modem is
not working the PCMCIA CDMA wireless card with me is not supported by Linux.
Linux detects the card when inserted but while configuring the modem it hangs
or give the message that modem is in use. Details of PCMCIA card is
800MHz CDMA 1X
Model: MC315
PCMCIA TYPE-II
Wireless Modem

I also changed my BIOS setting to hide the internal modem as given in https://desaiyn.tripod.com/laptop/ubuntu_on_thinkpad_R52.html/images/modem_tips.pdf
Google search gave me the following link which also states about similar
problem :
